Dhahran, the city of compounds: what does that mean for your move?
Dhahran differs from neighbouring Dammam and Khobar in that a large share of its residents live inside fenced residential compounds: Aramco housing, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals housing, air base and government and military housing, plus private compounds. What raises the price in Dhahran is not distance but time: time for gate procedures, time to drive inside the compound from the gate to the house, and any limits on the number of workers or working hours. The earlier the permits are ready and the procedure known, the shorter the day and the clearer the price.

How do compound entry procedures work?
In most Dhahran compounds the resident submits an entry request for the moving company before the date, listing the driver’s and workers’ names and ID numbers and the truck’s details, and setting the day and hours. At the gate the truck may be inspected and the workers checked against the permit, then allowed in, sometimes escorted by a security officer.
These steps differ between compounds and can change over time, so we never rely on a past job; we confirm your compound’s requirements with you on booking day, send our details early, and send exactly the workers named on the permit. Swapping one worker on the day can mean he is refused entry.

Who moves from Riyadh to Dhahran?
Most people on this route work for Aramco and related companies, are faculty or students at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, or belong to the air base and military and government bodies. There are also families who choose Dhahran’s modern districts for their calm and closeness to Khobar and Dammam.
Many of them receive housing from their employer, some of it partly furnished. So before the move we ask what the new home already has; there is no point moving a fridge or ACs if the housing has them, and every piece left behind saves truck space and time at the gate.
On the other hand, some things company housing does not usually provide and you will need to move: children’s bedrooms, home offices, books, small appliances and Arabic majlis seating that does not come with standard furniture. Write a list of what the new home has and what it lacks and send it with your furniture photos, and we will size the truck on what is actually moving rather than everything in the Riyadh home.
How do we prepare furniture for the Dhahran trip?
The road to Dhahran is fast and fairly short, but the destination is humid and coastal, and unloading in compounds can be delayed by procedures, so the truck may stand in the sun at the gate for a while. When is one day enough and when are two needed?
A move to an open Dhahran district finishes in one day for most flats, as the road is four to five hours and unloading needs no procedures. For compounds it depends on permitted moving hours: if the compound allows moving into the evening, we load in Riyadh in the morning, arrive in the afternoon and finish assembly the same day. If the hours are short or morning-only, we load in Riyadh in the afternoon, the truck stays locked overnight, and we are at the gate at the first permitted hour the next day.
Large villas naturally need longer to dismantle and load, and with gate time added, splitting the work over two days is the easier choice for everyone. We decide this with you after the survey and give you the full schedule before moving day.
What should you do in the Riyadh home after the truck leaves?
Many people focus on the destination and forget the other end. After the truck leaves the Riyadh home you still have to hand it back to the landlord or company in good condition. We suggest a quick walk-through with the crew before they leave to make sure nothing is left in a storeroom, on the roof or on a balcony, then photographing the empty home, recording the electricity and water meter readings, and handing over the keys against a receipt.
If the home needs cleaning before handover, arrange it the same day or the next, because you will be in Dhahran afterwards and coming back may be hard. If removing fixed wardrobes leaves holes, tell us in advance whether the landlord requires them repaired.
Items that do not go on the truck
Some items are not moved with furniture for safety reasons or because of compound rules: gas cylinders, fuel and flammable materials, chemicals and pesticides, and weapons, as well as official documents, gold and cash, which should stay with you. Some compounds inspect trucks at the gate, and such items can delay or prevent entry.

Dismantling and assembly inside compound housing
Every package includes dismantling bedrooms and wardrobes in Riyadh and assembling them in Dhahran. In compound housing we take extra care: we do not drill a wall or fix anything to the ceiling without written permission from the housing office, because many compounds forbid alterations to buildings without approval.
Some compound housing has smaller rooms or a different layout from the Riyadh home, so a ceiling-high wardrobe or a large bed may not fit the bedroom as before. We ask for the housing plan or room measurements if available and suggest before the move what will fit and what is better stored or sold.
If you need a wardrobe fixed to the wall or a screen hung, we first ask about the housing rules and do it only if allowed. As for ACs, much compound housing is already air-conditioned, so do not move your units before checking.
Dhahran’s humidity and your furniture
Dhahran is close to the Gulf coast and humid for most of the year. After arrival, run the air conditioning before unwrapping wooden furniture, leave electronics an hour before switching on, and do not store boxes in an outside storeroom or un-cooled garage, because cardboard absorbs moisture and weakens.
