How are belongings shipped from Riyadh to Libya?
Belongings go from Riyadh to Libya by sea in containers, the only practical route for furniture, cars and goods, while the plane is for small parcels and documents. There is no regular overland route suitable for household furniture between Saudi Arabia and Libya; the road crosses several countries, borders and handlings, so we use the sea from the start.
The container’s journey has three parts: from your Riyadh home to the Saudi port; the voyage through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, usually with a stop at a hub port where the container is moved to a ship serving Libya; and clearance at the Libyan port followed by delivery to your city. We choose the Libyan port by your city: Misrata and Tripoli for the west, Benghazi for the east.
Shipping prices from Riyadh to Libya
Moving furniture from Riyadh to Libya starts from SAR 2,700 for a single bedroom, SAR 7,620 for a two-bedroom flat and SAR 12,320 for a three-bedroom flat, with the price set by the real volume after packing, the Libyan port and the city. Single items have their own starting prices for those not moving a whole home.
Starting prices for homes and items on the Riyadh to Libya route:
| What you ship | Size or description | Starts from (SAR) |
|---|---|---|
| Single bedroom | Bed, wardrobe and bedside tables | 2,700 |
| Studio or one-bed with living room | A small complete shipment | 3,620 |
| Master bedroom | A large room with its pieces | 4,180 |
| Two-bedroom flat | Two rooms, living room and loose kitchen items | 7,620 |
| Three-bedroom flat | An average family home | 12,320 |
| Medium villa | One full container or more | 19,950 |
| Four-door wardrobe | Single item | 1,250 |
| Fridge or washing machine | Padded wrap | 650 |
| Split AC | Both units | 510 |
| 65-inch TV | Reinforced carton | 420 |
| Standard carton | In a groupage shipment | 93 |
| Small air parcel | Express | 330 |
| Car shipping | Container or RoRo | Ask for the price by call or WhatsApp |
The biggest price factor on this route is the length of the voyage and how many times the container changes vessel, followed by Libyan port charges and inland transport, especially to cities far from the ports such as Sabha in the south. What really lowers the cost is cutting volume: selling bulky cheap pieces before you travel, packing cartons tightly, and not shipping things you can buy in Libya at a reasonable price.
Example: a two-bedroom flat from Riyadh to Misrata
Take a flat with two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. After dismantling and packing, the two bedrooms take about 14 cubic metres, the living room with its majlis and tables about 8, and the kitchen with its appliances and cartons of dishes about 6, close to 28 cubic metres in all. That nearly fills a 20 ft container, so a private container suits better than shared space: a fixed price, a seal from Riyadh to Misrata, and clearance in the homeowner’s name alone.
How long does shipping from Riyadh to Libya take?
A container from Riyadh to Libya takes 4 to 7 weeks from loading at your home to delivery, and an air parcel 3 to 7 days. It is longer than other Mediterranean routes because direct sailings to Libya are few, and most containers transfer at a hub port to a smaller ship that continues to Libyan ports.
| Stage | Details | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| Packing and loading | At your Riyadh home with the inventory | 1 to 3 days |
| Road to the port | Truck to Jeddah or rail to Dammam | 2 to 4 days |
| First voyage | To a Mediterranean hub port | About two weeks |
| Transshipment | Waiting for the ship bound for Libya | One to two weeks |
| Clearance and delivery | At Misrata, Tripoli or Benghazi, then to the city | About a week |
Transshipment is the least predictable stage because it depends on the schedules of ships serving Libya. At sailing we tell you the container number and the hub port, and update the arrival date if it changes, so you can plan your trip and the handover of your home on a clear basis.
A container of your own or space in a shared one?
A private container to Libya is sealed in Riyadh and untouched until Libyan customs, while space in a shared container suits someone sending a room or a few cartons but waits until the container fills, after which the consignments are sorted at the Libyan port store. On a route with transshipment at an intermediate port, a private container is safer because its contents are never unloaded there.
| What matters to you | Space in a shared container | Private 20 or 40 ft container |
|---|---|---|
| Volume of belongings | A room or a few cartons | A flat or villa |
| How you pay | By cubic metre | Fixed price per container |
| Sailing | Once the container is full | Next available ship |
| What happens in Libya | Unloaded and sorted with other shipments | Cleared in your name and taken to your home |
A rough rule: if your belongings exceed 15 cubic metres, more than two fully furnished rooms, ask for a 20 ft price, and above 30 cubic metres ask about a 40 ft, because the price gap narrows a lot at these volumes.
Air freight from Riyadh to Libya
The plane to Libya suits small urgent parcels: documents, prescribed medicines, phones and gifts. A small express parcel starts from SAR 330 and arrives within 3 to 7 days in Tripoli, Benghazi or Misrata, usually via a connecting flight. Furniture and large loads are not flown because of the cost.
Air parcels are charged on the greater of their real and volumetric weight, which we get by multiplying the parcel’s dimensions in centimetres and dividing by 6,000. A 40 × 30 × 30 cm parcel, for example, has a volumetric weight of 6 kg, so if it really weighs 4 kg it is charged at 6. Choose a box that fits its contents exactly and leave no empty space. More on our air freight page.

- Suitable for the plane: documents, prescribed medicines, phones, small gifts.
- Not accepted by air: loose batteries, lots of perfume, aerosols, anything flammable.
- Collection: at the address in the main cities, or from the carrier’s office in the city.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Libya
Cars go from Riyadh to Libya by sea, either in a closed container, which suits new and valuable cars, or on a RoRo vessel when a sailing to the required Libyan port is available. We take the car from Riyadh to the port, inspect and photograph it and prepare its export papers, and the broker in Libya handles its release.

Conditions for importing used cars into Libya, including the accepted model year and fees, are applied as the Libyan authorities decide and can change, so we check with the broker at the Libyan port that your car is accepted by year and model before booking it. We need the registration, title deed, proof of export from the Kingdom and settled fines, and nothing may be packed inside the car. More on our car shipping page.
Moving household furniture from Riyadh to Libya
We move household furniture from Riyadh to Libya in clear stages: a carpenter dismantles, a crew packs and lists, a container is loaded with care, then unloading and reassembly in Libya through a local partner. A voyage that sometimes approaches two months through heat and humidity means packing must protect against water and rubbing alike, so we wrap wood in plastic first and then cardboard, sofas in plastic then blankets, and place moisture absorbers between the rows.

Heavy appliances go deep in the container, strapped down; dismantled wardrobes stand as panels against the walls; numbered cartons fill the gaps; mattresses surround mirrors and paintings. A container that moves between two ships is lifted and lowered twice, so good stowage here is not a luxury but what keeps your belongings from shaking loose.
Appliances and electricity in Libya
Electricity in Libya is 230 volts at 50 hertz, and appliances marked 50/60Hz work without trouble, though you may need plug adaptors. In areas with frequent power cuts it helps to ship energy-efficient appliances and avoid very large ones that need special wiring.
Kitchens and AC units before shipping
A wooden kitchen is taken down in numbered units if it will be refitted in Libya to the same measurements; otherwise it is better to ship only the appliances and utensils. AC units are removed with both parts and their pipes wrapped, while old piping is left behind as it rarely suits reinstallation. The fridge is switched off and dried the day before loading, and the washing machine drum is fixed so it does not move on a long voyage.
Who is shipping from Riyadh to Libya for?
Most requests come from Libyan families returning home after years in Riyadh, employees moving part of their furniture, students sending books and belongings, and traders importing Saudi-made goods. Each needs a different solution: a family needs a private container and full packing, an employee may only need space in a shared container, a student a parcel or a few cartons, and a trader a commercial container with its papers. Tell us your situation and we will suggest what fits, without charging for services you do not need.
Shipping documents and Libyan customs
To ship belongings to Libya you need copies of your passport and iqama, a detailed inventory in Arabic, the recipient’s details and phone number in Libya, and the ocean bill of lading. We handle the export declaration on FASAH and the container booking.
- Copy of the sender’s passport and Saudi iqama.
- Inventory in Arabic, numbered by carton with approximate values.
- The recipient’s name, national number or passport, address and phone in Libya.
- The bill of lading we hand over after sailing.
- For goods: invoice, certificate of origin and packing list; for cars: registration and title deed.
At the Libyan port the broker handles release. Customs duties may apply to items customs regard as new or commercial, along with port and storage charges if collection is delayed. So we advise realistic values on the inventory and a recipient ready with their papers before the container arrives.
What happens when the container reaches the Libyan port?
When the ship reaches Misrata, Tripoli or Benghazi, the recipient is notified, the Libyan broker submits the customs declaration with the bill of lading and inventory, the container is inspected, and after release it is trucked to the address and unloaded. We follow this stage with our partner in Libya and keep you informed at each step.
Time spent at the port costs money after the free days, so if the recipient is late or a document is missing, storage charges build up. That is why we send the bill of lading and inventory to the recipient as soon as the ship sails, so they are ready days before the container arrives.
Prohibited items when shipping from Riyadh to Libya
A container or parcel bound for Libya cannot take anything flammable or explosive, weapons or their parts, narcotics, medicines without prescription or perishable food.
Cities we deliver to in Libya
We deliver from Riyadh to cities in western, eastern and southern Libya, most often Tripoli, Misrata and Benghazi.

| Area | Cities | Port we usually choose |
|---|---|---|
| Tripoli and around | Tripoli, Tajoura, Janzour, Zawiya, Sabratha, Gharyan | Tripoli |
| Centre | Misrata, Zliten, Khoms, Bani Walid, Sirte | Misrata |
| East | Benghazi, Marj, Bayda, Derna, Tobruk, Ajdabiya | Benghazi |
| South | Sabha, Ubari, Murzuq | Tripoli or Misrata, then by road |
Cities close to the ports receive their furniture a day or two after release, while southern cities such as Sabha need a long road haul from the coast, and we agree the date and cost with you before shipping. For our Libya coverage from other Saudi cities see the shipping to Libya page or read shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Libya.
Shipping to southern Libya and inland cities
Southern Libyan cities such as Sabha, Ubari and Murzuq have no nearby port, so the container first reaches Tripoli or Misrata and its contents then travel hundreds of kilometres by road. This leg needs a truck suited to the long haul and advance coordination with the recipient, and it adds days to the transit and cost to the price.
So for those in the south we offer two options: unload the container on the coast and move the furniture on a local truck, or move the container sealed all the way to the city if roads and procedures allow. We agree the option and the cost with you before shipping, not after the container arrives.
An air parcel or cartons by sea for your family in Libya?
An air parcel arrives in days but is charged by the kilo, while cartons in a sea groupage take weeks but cost far less each. If the gifts are few and light and wanted for an upcoming occasion, the plane makes sense; if they are many cartons of clothes and belongings with no fixed date, sea is better value.

Our crews reach every Riyadh district and the governorates around it, and we arrange container or truck access according to the district.

- East: An Nasim, Al Manar, Al Faiha, As Sulay, Al Janadriyah.
- Centre: Al Ma’ather, Al Olaya, Al Malaz, Al Murabba, Al Futah.

Sending parcels and goods to Libya
Personal parcels for family in Libya go by plane when they are few and urgent, or with a sea groupage shipment when there are many cartons, with a groupage carton starting from SAR 93. Commercial goods travel in full or groupage containers with an invoice, certificate of origin and packing list, and the importer in Libya is responsible for meeting the item’s requirements there.
Insurance and storage before shipping to Libya
A long voyage with a change of vessel makes insurance something we recommend. It costs a small percentage of the declared value and covers breakage and loss in transit. If you need time before shipping, we keep your belongings packed in our Riyadh warehouse until you set the container date.
Mistakes that delay shipments to Libya
- An unprepared recipient: a recipient who does not know the arrival date delays release by days.
- An unnumbered list: cartons without numbers make inspection longer and delivery harder.
- Commercial quantities in a personal shipment: dozens of the same item change how the shipment is classed.
- A port far from the city: a container to Tripoli for a recipient in Benghazi means a long road haul.
- An unchecked car: a car customs will not accept stays at the port while its charges grow.

Tips before shipping from Riyadh to Libya
- Allow up to two months for the container in the worst case and plan your trip and home handover around it.
- Pack what you need for the first month in your suitcases.
- Give two phone numbers for the recipient in Libya, as connections there can drop.
- Do not ship a car before you know its import fees and whether its model year is accepted.
- Choose the port nearest your city even if its sailing is slightly slower; long inland transport is costly.
Never ship the container in the name of someone other than the owner or the approved recipient. Mismatched names stop release at the Libyan port while storage charges pile up.
If you are comparing North African routes, shipping from Riyadh to Morocco sails the same way through the Mediterranean, and the Jeddah to Libya route usually leaves from the same port.
Riyadh to Tripoli or Benghazi is a long journey across the seas, and we arrange it for you from the first carton to the last piece carried into your home.
