The road from Saudi Arabia to Oman: Empty Quarter or the UAE?

The direct road route from Saudi Arabia to Oman is the Empty Quarter crossing, the only land crossing between the two countries, facing the Ramlat Khaylah crossing in Oman’s Al Dhahirah Governorate. It is served by a 564 km desert road across the Rub’ al Khali from its junction with the Al Batha road, bringing trucks to Ibri and then on to Muscat, Al Dakhiliyah and Al Batinah without passing through a third country.

Before this road opened, shipments to Oman went through the UAE, and that route is still useful in some cases: when the destination is in northern Oman near the UAE border, such as Al Buraimi, Sohar or Shinas; when the load is combined with cargo bound for the UAE; or when the destination is Musandam in the far north, which can only be reached by road through the UAE. On this route the truck crosses the UAE in transit with transit papers, without unloading.

We choose the route once we know the loading city and the Omani wilayat. A load from Riyadh or Al-Ahsa to Muscat or Nizwa usually goes through the Empty Quarter because it is shorter; a load to Al Buraimi may go via the UAE; and a load to Salalah goes through the Empty Quarter and then south along the interior road to Dhofar. Before booking we explain why we chose the route and how the timing differs.

You will find all our services on this line on the shipping to Oman page, and truck and road details on the land freight page.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Oman start from SAR 140 for parcels, SAR 230 for a large box, SAR 1,110 for a bedroom, SAR 1,850 for a three-bedroom home, SAR 1,670 for a car and SAR 1,390 per tonne of commercial goods. The final price depends on the size of the shipment, the loading city, the wilayat in Oman and the route chosen.

Oman is one of the furthest Gulf destinations from most Saudi cities, so its price reflects distance more than Kuwait or Bahrain does. A load from Al-Ahsa or Riyadh is nearer the start of the Empty Quarter road than one leaving Jeddah or Madinah, and delivery in Muscat or Nizwa differs from delivery in Salalah, which lies a long way south of Muscat. Truck type changes the cost as well: either a dedicated truck or a slot on a shared truck that departs for Oman when its load is complete.

Because the road is long and runs through desert, we make sure the load is secured and well packed so it does not shift or suffer from heat, and that is part of the price, not an extra. Extras only apply case by case: optional insurance, storage when required, and wooden crates for delicate pieces.

How long does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman take?

Road shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman usually takes 3 to 5 days from Riyadh, Dammam and Al-Ahsa to Muscat, 4 to 6 days from Qassim and 5 to 8 days from Jeddah and Makkah, with a day or two more for delivery in Salalah. This table shows the time by loading city:

These times are approximate from loading day and depend on how quickly both crossings process the truck. The longest part of the trip is the desert road itself, so we plan departures so the truck covers it in daylight, and before leaving we check fuel, tyres and essential spares.

Saudi cities we collect from for Oman

We collect Oman-bound shipments from every region of the Kingdom, and pickups from distant cities are booked ahead so the load catches the truck heading to Oman.

Central and Eastern regions

Riyadh pickups cover the north (Al Malqa, Al Narjis, Al Qirawan), the east (Al Rawdah, Al Khaleej), the centre (Olaya, Al Murabba) and the south (Al Shifa, Namar), plus Al Kharj and Diriyah. In the Eastern Province we collect from Dammam, Khobar, Dhahran, Qatif and Jubail, and in Al-Ahsa from Hofuf, Mubarraz, Al Uyun and Al Jafr. These areas are closest to the start of the Empty Quarter road, so their shipments are quicker.

The west, Qassim and the north

From Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, Madinah and Yanbu we collect by appointment, and loads head to Riyadh first, then Al-Ahsa and the Empty Quarter road. From Buraydah, Unaizah, Ar Rass, Hail and Tabuk, loads come down to Riyadh. Because the road from the west is long, packing is tighter and the load is secured in stages inside the box.

The south

From Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, Najran and Bisha we collect the same way, and the load heads east via Wadi Al-Dawasir or Riyadh and then to Al-Ahsa. We tell you the route and timing before collection so you can plan when you leave your home.

Full truck or shared load to Oman?

Which truck suits your move to Oman depends on how much you are sending and how flexible your date is. A whole house, an office or a villa usually needs a full truck that loads once and drives straight to your address, while a single room, some appliances or a few boxes can travel in a shared load heading to the Sultanate.

A shared load to Oman normally leaves once it is complete and may stop in Muscat, Al Batinah and Al Dakhiliyah before reaching you, so allow a day or two of patience. In return it saves a good part of the price, and each customer’s goods are kept apart under covers and labels showing their name and shipment number. A full truck costs more but gives you fixed departure and arrival days, which matters if you start work in Oman on a set date.

Moving furniture from Saudi Arabia to Oman

Furniture moving from Saudi Arabia to Oman starts from SAR 1,110 for a bedroom and SAR 1,850 for a three-bedroom home, covering dismantling, packing, inventory, loading, transport, clearance, unloading and assembly. On a long desert road such as the Empty Quarter route, packing matters more than anything else.

Packing Furniture for Shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman
Office paper archives sealed tightly in file boxes before shipping to Oman

Desert heat builds up inside a closed box, so we protect leather and glossy wood with a layer of fabric before the blankets so nothing sticks to them, and we put candles, perfumes and cosmetics in small sealed cartons away from the roof. Electronics are wrapped in bubble wrap and then reinforced cardboard, and screens travel upright. Papers, files and books go in tightly closed file boxes so no dust gets in on the road.

Every piece and every carton carries a number on the inventory and the name of the room it will go to in Oman. On arrival the crew places items where they belong, reassembles beds, wardrobes and tables, hangs mirrors and curtains if you ask, and collects the packing materials.

Offices and companies

We move company offices from the Kingdom to Oman with their furniture, equipment and archives, numbering everything to the floor plan of the new premises in Muscat, Sohar or Salalah. We recommend backing up device data, appointing one person from the company to receive and coordinate with us, and keeping office assets separate from any commercial goods on their own declaration.

Kitchens and air conditioners in your new Omani home

A wooden kitchen is taken apart after it is emptied, its units numbered in the order they stood, and the marble top wrapped on its own because it is the piece most likely to crack. For a split air conditioner, a technician draws the gas into the outdoor unit before removing it, and we wrap both units in cardboard and blankets. Kitchen sizes in Omani homes may differ from your current one, so send us the wall measurements of the new home before shipping to find out whether the kitchen fits as it is or needs adjusting.

💡 Tip: Write the general contents on each paper box without sensitive detail and keep the full list with you; that way you find your files quickly in Oman without revealing them to everyone who sees the box.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman

We ship cars from Saudi Arabia to Oman in closed carriers from SAR 1,670; the car is covered with a protective cover and strapped by its wheels on the upper or lower deck. Transit matches the furniture truck, and carrier options are described on our car shipping page.

Rules for importing a used car into Oman

Oman requires a used private car to be under seven years old, and used trucks and buses under ten. Omani customs requires vehicles coming from GCC countries to carry an export certificate issued by the competent authority in the country of registration, and does not accept the clearance certificate in its place. The car must also meet the specifications approved in the Sultanate.

That is why we start by asking the car’s build year. A car inside the limit still needs groundwork before it moves: the title in your name where required, every fine settled, and the traffic department’s export certificate in hand. If it is older, we advise against shipping it for registration, because it will not be accepted. After arrival the car is inspected, insured and registered with the Royal Oman Police.

If you will drive your own car to Oman

You may also drive yourself across the Empty Quarter, carrying the istimara (original and in date), your licence, Oman-valid insurance and, when the car belongs to someone else, the owner’s Absher external authorization. The road is long and parts of it have no services, so check fuel, water and the spare tyre before setting off. Countries that want a customs pass for temporary car entry are covered on our triptyque page.

⚠️ Note: The export certificate is a condition for bringing a GCC vehicle into Oman, so do not book a car shipping date until you are sure it can be issued, especially if the car is mortgaged or under finance.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman suits whatever cannot wait for a long road trip: papers and documents, game consoles or electronics, prescribed medicines, urgent spare parts, or things for the days before your furniture lands. We fly from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Dammam’s King Fahd International Airport to Muscat International Airport, with door delivery typically two to four days after collection; see the air freight page for more.

Air Freight from Saudi Arabia to Oman

Air freight is charged on the greater of scale weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is a box’s length times its width times its height in centimetres, divided by 6,000, so a console carton of 55 × 45 × 30 cm comes to roughly 12 kg. For anyone shipping from Jeddah in particular, air is a practical choice for small items, because the road from the west to Oman is the longest of the Gulf routes. Since the rate hinges on weight and the flight booked, ask for the price by call or WhatsApp.

Shipping commercial goods to Oman by road and sea

We ship commercial goods from Saudi Arabia to Oman by road from SAR 1,390 per tonne, on shared or full trucks, and deliver to the customer’s warehouse in Muscat, Rusayl, Sohar or any area. Paperwork for goods is an invoice, an origin certificate and a packing list, and import data in Oman is submitted through the Bayan customs system.

For very large volumes, or for shipments from western Saudi Arabia to southern Oman, sea freight in containers can be an option: from Jeddah Islamic Port or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam to Sohar Port or Salalah Port. It takes longer and involves formalities at both ports, but it lowers the cost per tonne for heavy goods. Our sea freight page covers containers.

Luggage and personal parcels start from SAR 140, and a large box from SAR 230: clothes for a student in Nizwa, gifts for family in Sur, or personal things for an employee who moved to Duqm. Just tell us what is inside, what it is roughly worth, and the recipient’s name, number and address.

Dates, food and refrigerated shipping to Oman

Dates and packaged food travel to Oman in personal quantities with ordinary belongings if they are well sealed, and in commercial quantities with their health certificates and certificate of origin. In the hot months soft dates, sweets and sensitive medicines are at real risk on a long desert road, so we suggest a refrigerated truck that holds a steady temperature, or air freight for small amounts. Refrigerated rates depend on quantity and date, so ask for the price by call or WhatsApp.

Documents and customs clearance between Saudi Arabia and Oman

Personal shipments to Oman travel on three documents: your ID or iqama, the recipient’s Omani ID or passport with residence card, and a full inventory. We prepare the declaration on the Saudi side and coordinate with the clearing agent at Ramlat Khaylah, or at the northern entry point if the route runs through the UAE.

Preparing Shipments from Saudi Arabia to Oman
The door of a closed truck being shut and a metal security seal fixed to the handle before it sets off for Oman
  • Household goods: sender ID, Omani recipient details and a numbered list.
  • Car: original registration card, export certificate from the country of registration, paid fines, the owner’s ID and proof of the build year.
  • Trade cargo: invoice, origin certificate, weighed packing list and the importer’s registration.
  • Route via the UAE: transit papers, with the truck sealed by a seal that stays intact until Oman.

The metal security seal on the truck door carries a number recorded on the shipment papers, and it is broken only for official inspection or on arrival at your door. If the route is transit through the UAE, the customs seal shows the truck was not opened on the way. Either way, a clear list shortens inspection, and new items are listed as they are with their invoices.

Returning Omanis and new residents can normally bring used furniture and personal effects in duty-free under the Gulf’s common customs law, as long as the items are for their own use. Cars have their own conditions, and new goods or commercial quantities have their own fees.

Items you cannot ship to Oman

Most of what cannot be shipped to Oman is well known, but it is worth repeating because on a long road any stop at the border is costly:

  • Flammable materials such as sprays, paints, fuel and gas cylinders.
  • Unlicensed chemicals, fertilisers and pesticides.
  • Weapons, non-household sharp tools and ammunition.
  • Narcotics, and medicines without a documented prescription.
  • Counterfeit products and prohibited publications.
  • Perishable food, plants and soil, and cash or gold inside the shipment.

Omani governorates we deliver to

We deliver shipments from Saudi Arabia to every governorate of Oman, with Muscat the main destination, followed by Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah and Al Dhahirah, then Al Sharqiyah, Dhofar, Al Wusta and Musandam.

🌴 Dhofar, Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta
Salalah, Taqah and Mirbat, Sur and Ibra, Duqm and Haima, with Al Buraimi and Musandam via the UAE.

Salalah in Dhofar lies a long way south of Muscat, and the road there from Ramlat Khaylah runs through the interior via Haima, so we add a day or two. Musandam can only be reached by road through the UAE, so its shipments are arranged in advance. In Muscat we coordinate the unloading time and lift use with building or compound management.

Shipping to Salalah and Duqm: southern and central Oman

Shipping to Salalah in Dhofar takes the interior road south after Ramlat Khaylah, through Haima and then Thumrait down to the southern coast, a long journey inside Oman itself, which is why we add a day or two to the Muscat time. In Salalah we deliver to areas such as Al Saada, Al Haffa, Awqad, Ad Dahariz and New Salalah, and to nearby Taqah and Mirbat.

If you are moving to Salalah during the Khareef season, when visitors and road traffic increase, we suggest booking early. Duqm in Al Wusta is home to many employees of the economic zone and port and is also reached via Haima, so we schedule office and staff-housing shipments there on fixed dates.

Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Oman

  1. Message 0560533140 with photos, your loading city and the Omani wilayat.
  2. We fix the route and truck, size the load, and confirm price and loading day.
  3. You prepare ID copies and recipient details, plus the export certificate if a car is included.
  4. The crew dismantles, packs, numbers and loads, then the truck is locked and the security seal fitted.
  5. The truck drives to the Empty Quarter or Al Batha crossing, and we update you at each stage.
  6. Once Oman clears the truck, we phone the recipient with an arrival window.
  7. Unloading and assembly follow; you check the list and sign.

If the shipment arrives before your Oman home is ready, or you need to vacate your Saudi home before travelling, your furniture waits in a closed warehouse until you are ready. Details are on our furniture storage page.

Protecting your shipment on the Empty Quarter road

The Empty Quarter road is long and straight, and the real risk to belongings on it is heat, dust and hours of continuous vibration. So we use tightly closed boxes, strap the load at short intervals, put divider boards between layers, and stack cartons so there is no gap for anything to move in.

Insurance is optional and based on the value you declare; we spell out what it covers and the reporting deadline before loading. At unloading, open the valuable pieces first while the crew is there and note any issue on the list before you sign.

Mistakes that delay a shipment to Oman

The road to Oman is long, and any small mistake before loading grows at the border. These are the most common causes of delay:

  • A route that does not suit the wilayat: a load for Al Buraimi sent through the Empty Quarter may take longer than needed, and one for Muscat sent via the UAE may need extra transit papers.
  • No export certificate for the car: without it a GCC vehicle cannot enter Oman, and the clearance certificate is not accepted instead.
  • Incomplete recipient details: an Omani ID or residence card and a working phone number are needed to receive the shipment after crossing.
  • Forgetting Musandam and Salalah in planning: the first is reached only through the UAE, the second needs a day or two more.
  • Ordinary packing in summer: leather, candles and perfume need extra heat protection inside the box.

Tips before shipping to Oman

  • Check your car’s age and that the export certificate can be issued before booking.
  • Ask which route suits your wilayat: the Empty Quarter direct or via the UAE.
  • In summer, ask for extra packing for leather, candles, perfume and appliances.
  • Empty and unplug the fridge a day ahead and dry it so no smell builds up on the long road.
  • Keep original documents, gold and everyday medicines in your own bag.
  • If the destination is Salalah or Musandam, book early, because arranging the road there takes longer.
